Overview

Motorica Start is an app aimed to help users of Motorica bionic hands adjust the device to their everyday needs.

My role

My responsibilities spanned all phases of the design process as I was leading a team of 6 designers for this project.

With design thinking approach in mind, I led user research, guided concept development, and crafted intuitive, visually-pleasing designs. I oversaw user testing to iterate our design and fostered collaboration between designers, developers, and stakeholders to ensure our design vision was aligned with the broader project objectives.

The problem

Outdated MVP design lead to user confusion and increased dependence on the support centre.

Our users

Analysis showed, that we have two broad user groups: prosthesis users and personnel, with prosthesis users displaying most frustration.

Meet Anna

Anna was using a mechanical prosthesis for many years before finally switching to a bionic one.

Needs to be self-sufficient

Needs to be able to perform vital 2-handed tasks

Wants the transition to a bionic prosthesis to be seamless

Wants the new hand to require as little attention as possible

Expects the app to aid her with her new bionic hand

She is busy with her work and doesn’t like wasting time

Meet Anton

Anton was working as a prosthetist in Motorica for the last 1.5 years.

Likes helping his patients acquire new skills

Needs to be able to help his clients efficiently

Wants a professional tool that will help him with his job

Needs the app to be easy to explain to his patients

Customer journey

The process of acquiring and adapting to a bionic hand can be exhausting and stressful for the user. We needed to make sure that the app was actually helping, so I created a CJM to see what we were dealing with.

Pain points

User research revealed that most issues are common among user groups, but employees have it less rough due to better understanding of the product.

IA and wireframes

Using the research findings and user pains understanding, we identified desired user flow and IA. That brought us to design concepts and wireframes development.

Design

We adopted a design style that combined the iOS guidelines with Motorica's brand style, aiming for a friendly and cool aesthetic that resonated with our users.

Solutions

New user interaction with settings

We segmented settings by usage frequency and moved advanced Prosthetist mode to a pin-secured section.

Reflection

Inspiration can come from unlikely places

One surprising lesson was how inspiration can come from the most unlikely places. Elements from gaming apps like Pokémon Go influenced our design decisions, teaching me the importance of looking outside one’s immediate domain for innovative solutions. The takeaway: Don't limit your sources of inspiration to your industry.

Transparency and Alignment is Integral

Leading a team of six designers highlighted the need for open communication and alignment with stakeholders and developers. I learned that a design vision is only as strong as its weakest link; if the team isn't aligned, it shows in the end product. Therefore, frequent check-ins, transparency in design rationales, and iterative feedback are non-negotiable.
